Padre Island

December 30, 2014

Yesterday we took a ride over to the Padre Island National Seashore. The sun was out and it was not raining.

We wanted to take a ride along the beach and check out the campgrounds. We stopped briefly at the visitor center to pick up some information about the park.

Information about the garbage that is found on the beach is provided. The swirling currents of the Gulf of Mexico along with the onshore wind is to blame for it showing up on the beach. The garbage itself is from the states and rivers surrounding the Gulf. Some of it is from the oil and gas platforms. Some thrown over by fishermen and there is the offshore illegal dumping. The information stated the amount is staggering  and the clean up is never ending. We did see small amounts on the beach that had come in that day and noticed a lot of water bottles along the edge of the dunes.

It was a cool day but the sun was shining and the wind not as strong as it has been all and all a nice ride.

When we got back to Mustang Island we took one of the access roads  out to the beach to scout out a place to camp. Along the way we spotted this bus with a rooftop room parked near the fishing pier.

We had hoped to camp on the beach here on Mustang Island one or two nights when we leave the Pioneer Beach resort on Friday before we continue west. The weather right now does not look like it plans on co-operating. The prediction is for possible strong thunderstorms and winds of 16 to 25 mph and we are not sure we want to be on the open beach for this. So we will continue to monitor the weather and decide Friday morning.
