A Ride Around the Ogilby Hills and Checking Out the Cargo Muchacho Mountains

February 13, 2018

We decided to check out Sidewinder Road today. The goal was to find a boondocking site either closer to the Cargo Muchacho Mountains or the Ogilby Hills for the future. It is a pretty and peaceful area off of Ogilby Road and even though we are not sure when we will be back we are pretty sure we will be. So today we wanted to take a closer look around the area and see what was available that we could get the Stinger "B" into. Or maybe I should say, we are willing to get her into. We will not risk scraping her bottom, scratching her sides, or getting stuck no matter how much we like the site.

Clouds over the Cargo Muchacho Mountains this morning.

The sun did not make it through the clouds over the Ogilby Hills.

By the time we decided to take the ride it was after lunch and we could
see blue sky over the Mountains.

Ogilby Hills

I added a telephoto attachment to my lens and I found
what it did to the look of the mountains interesting.

We could see this sign and the two fenced in areas. So we had to stop
and see what it was all about. We are guessing it is something you
need to see from above. Interesting just the same.

Then we spotted a road that looked like it would fun to explore.

It actually was pretty flat at this point.

A couple of holes.

Tom checking the route ahead and deciding we could keep going.

A small cave up on our right.

Looking up the wash as we cross it.

The end of the line for us. Loose rocks and a deep "V".

A different hole/cave.
What did Tom see? Beer bottles. Why do people have to throw
garbage in every hole they see in the desert?

A wonderfully green Ocotillo with a few flowers at the tips.

Heading back out. The road behind us

and the road ahead.

Back out on Sidewinder I spotted a whole field of Ocotillo.

We turned right and could see I-8 ahead of us and then we spotted this
off to our right. The two statues at the entrance were cherubs.

In the center.

This same statue was straight ahead at the entrance and then on the
right and left. All outside the circle.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Blessed Mother way over to the left
out of the circle, also.

There was nothing to explain what this was and it looked like it had been there a while. When we got to the museum we asked and though they knew it was there no one knew what it was.

Pavement and smoother road ahead.

When you come off of I-8 onto Sidewinder this is just  little ways
down on your left.

Then just a little bit farther this sign is on your right.

We then turned onto the Center of the World Rd and came to the sign below. In the California Benchmark we could see a spot listed as the Official Center of the World. Our search has ended we have found the place.

If you would like to read more and see more pictures...:) :  Click Here  I wrote a separate post about our visit.  It actually was a nice stop and we would consider going back in the future to check out what has been added.

We put our $6.00 in the slot and went in.
(I went to Catholic School and had nuns for 12 years there is no way
we were not putting the money in the slot...lol)
Side note: If you actually want to step on the spot, the Official Center, it cost
another $2 a piece but that did include a short movie explaining about the
museum, and a very nice tour guide who gave us more information about the
History behind the Museum itself.
We were committed and forked over the additional four bucks.

We have seen this more then once from I-8 and wondered.
Stairway to Heaven or No Where? Mystery solved.
Click above for what it is.

I had wanted to see this tiny Chapel up close since Patsy, Chillin' with Patsyhad
posted a picture of it when they were parked across the highway at Pilot Knob.
Today, we walked up the stairs and inside.
Click above for a picture of the inside.

We have gone by this corner more then once. Today was the first
time I noticed the sign.

The Stinger "B" is just hanging out waiting for our return.

The sunset peeking through the clouds.

Lovely afterglow.

It was a good day. Not totally as we planned but then those are usually some of the best days.
If you have time to leave a comment we would enjoy hearing from you.

    2. Thank you for letting me know about the link not working. I believe I did get it fixed.

We really enjoyed the ride and the stop at the Center of the World Plaza.
We will be back in that area again, I am sure, lots more roads to explore.

  2. SO many places I haven't seen, but I would never drive down that road in my rig. Mostly because I'm by myself I suppose ... aren't you afraid to get stuck??

    1. We think the same thing there are so many place to see and explore.

We never take our motor home down a back road without first unhooking the Jeep and doing some exploring. Plus, we usually walk around the area we plan on pulling into. Because the answer is yes, we are afraid of getting the motor home stuck...:)
The Jeep has been down some pretty steep washes, loose stones, and deep sand and so far so good. Places the motor home will never see.

Being by yourself, I would so agree, it is better to error on the side of caution every time.

  3. Looks like a fun drive for you two. And Tom satisfied a bit of his 'cave' fix and you your Ocotillo fix. Nice that it is green and blooming!
Your weather was much like ours yesterday, waiting for the sun to stay out longer than it did.

    1. It was fun ride and the whole Museum was interesting.
It is sad that people do not get the concept of no trace camping. We see it out in the forest sites at home, also.

  5. Nice Jeep ride. Lots of interesting things in those hills.

Center of the World was interesting too. You two had a busy day. Enjoy your stay.

I've seen the little chapel many times driving by. Looks interesting but...

  6. Some people don't realize that those caves are probably an Animal's Den. How would they like it if someone trashed their homes.
Couldn't find the link about the Spiral Stairway.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

    1. I am pretty sure I fixed the link or just click on my side bar on the post, Insert for 2-13-2018.

I am guessing the people who leave garbage could care less about anyone or anything but themselves...sad but true.

  7. I fixed the Link to get to the Insert. Or if anyone is still interested in reading about the Museum or seeing the pictures you can click on the Post: Insert for 02-13-2018. Plus, I learned something new about setting up the link...:)

  8. Great pictures, looks like an excellent day of exploring and learning. I agree about the garbage, it's too bad that people do that but there isn't anything we can do except clean it up.

I loved the pictures, especially while looking for a place to park the Stinger B. Looked like some amazing places to explore.

We'll have to check out the Center of the World some time. So many things to see and do!! Keep us busy for years to come.

    Thanks for sharing.

  9. You are so right, there are so many things to see and do. Then we add the places we want to re-visit and we will never run out either...:)

We enjoyed the exploring and got off track as far as looking for a place to park...LOL We went back a second time and did a little better.

I enjoyed the sharing. You are welcome, Deb
