Moving to Ajo, Arizona

Friday, December 11. 2020

This morning we did not have much to do, since we had pretty much packed up the day before. We only had the bedroom slide to pull in, Tom disconnected everything outside, a quick stop to have our propane filled, and we hooked up the Jeep and were on our way.

On AZ-90 heading North.
Middle picture the Whetstone Mountains they will
soon be in our rearview mirror.

After stopping for diesel we merged on to I-10 heading west.

I had been watching for that first Saguaro and then I almost
missed the picture. Yes I know it is blurry and through the
screen but bottom left there it is.

I do not know about the rest of you but I do not think I will

ever get used to seeing these above the road.

Or this billboard that we saw later on AZ-86.
Nor do I want to.
It has been one strange year but we have been blessed to have
or health and be able to travel to the warmth for the winter

We are on AZ-86 and this will take us all the way to Why
and AZ-85 where we will turn north towards Ajo.
The Saguaros are wonderful to see.

This is new since the last time we came this way a couple
of years ago. It is a border patrol checkpoint. The sign said
to not stop just slow down and we were waved on.

Then we saw some Teddy Bear Cholla

The closer we got to Why the worse the road got.

The cemeteries out here are always filled with color.

Turning right and heading north

on AZ-85 towards Ajo and our destination.

Off in the distance we can see the tailings from the
New Cornelia mine a currently inactive open-pit copper mine.

There is the sign for our turn: Darby Well Road.

While Tom was unhooking the Jeep I spotted this
Ocotillo across the road and walked over for a picture.

After calling our friend Doug we headed down the road
towards what will be home for a time.

Doug and Yuma
It was wonderful to see them both.

The view from our patio area.
Thank you for saving this great spot for us, Doug.
We are happy in the quiet of the desert.
Plus, we have great neighbors.

The sun setting on our first night boondocking
in the desert on this our 7th Adventure.

The afterglow was beautiful.

Good Night!

We are glad you stopped by!
If you have time to leave a comment we would enjoy hearing from you.

  1. Beautiful sunset! I really wish I could boondock, although not sure how scary it would be since I'm alone. I should look into solar panels. The saguaro are the first thing I look for when heading that direction. Nice you could catch up with Doug and Yuma for a time.

    1. I can see how boondocking could be scary on your own. Just so you know you would be welcome to boondock by us anytime. Tom and I boondocked with just our batteries and generator up until last year so that is doable. We are enjoying our time parked here by Doug and Yuma.

  4. We, like you , look for that first Saguaros on our trips. We are certainly missing all those views, so keep posting them so we can enjoy the southwest thru all of you. Certainly will be a different winter for us, missing being down there already, " homesick" sounds crazy doesn't it. Take care.

    1. I was watching for them as I had spotted them out there a couple years back and still almost missed any type of picture...lol It is certainly going to be a different winter for you all and honestly "homesick" does not sound crazy at all. I think like us anywhere you park your home is just that home. So besides missing out on coming south I know you must also miss being in your home. Though from Patsy's post you did luck out and land in a beautiful place. Stay safe and take care.
