Kingman to Quartzsite With a Stop in Lake Havasu

 Saturday, November 4, 2023

Today was another beautiful day in the desert the weather was perfect and Happy Hour matched the day. Patsy, Chillin' with Patsy, and Bill, On Our Way, along with Gibbs drove over and joined us for a couple of hours of sitting out on this lovely day for our first official Happy Hour with friends. (Patsy took a couple of pictures and they are posted on her blog.) The conversation, as always, was lively and enjoyable. We are looking forward to doing the same thing several more times this winter. Gibbs was the perfect little gentleman and we enjoyed his visit, also.

The little black dot in the center is Black Beauty and
it occupants heading home.

Sitting out on our patio this is our lovely view.

Tom took a great picture of tonight's afterglow.

Leaving Kingman we headed south on I-40 a little later in the day. We were only going about 31 miles to the Haviland Rest Area for the night. It was a nice stop and though we were close to the highway we both slept well.

Leaving Kingman

We have gone by this several times wondering what it is.
So I googled it and it is Called Area 66

This unusual 40-foot-diameter geodesic dome structure, known as Area 66, is a UFO museum dedicated to the alleged crash of a “flying saucer” outside of Kingman, Arizona, in 1953. It is a former private residence shaped like a huge golf ball, originally built as the Dinosphere restaurant for a never-completed desert community. The information I found said it was temporarily closed.

Leaving the rest area after having our morning coffee we headed the short 31 miles to Lake Havasu. We had plans to meet a couple we met a few years ago, Rose and George, for lunch. George mentioned a parking area for a Flea Market near the London Bridge where we could park. As long as the flea market is not going on, we agree this is a good place to park with the motorhome. It is within  a short walking distance of the restaurants and shops under the London Bridge.

This time instead, since I wanted to do some shopping, we decided Walmart would be a good place to stop and leave the motorhome while we went to lunch. I had checked with Walmart a couple days back and they had told me no overnight parking but we thought a couple hours would be fine. We asked because it would be parked there a few hours. I explained we wanted to come in shop then leave it for a couple of hours while we went to lunch. The woman I talked to said no we could not park there at all then hung up before I could say not even to shop. No big deal we moved on. Dillard's in the same complex looked to have a pretty level parking area and they said no problem. So we unhooked the Jeep and headed towards the London Bridge. We met Rose and George just outside the entrance to the English Village and after hello hugs headed towards the restaurant, Burgers By the Bridge. After ordering our food we sat down and proceeded to spend several hours enjoying the company. The conversation never lagged and in what seemed like no time at all Tom noticed the time, since, we still had a couple of hours of driving to make our destination we reluctantly said we needed to get going. Hope we get the opportunity to spend some time again in the near future.

Leaving the rest are an pulling out on to I-40 a welcome sight
is the Truckers making their way East and West with all
the things we need.

Not to many miles and we were exiting I-40
to head south on AZ-95

The road ahead.

Then there was the hand still waving; it had been a couple of

years since we came this way and we were happy to see it.

Laky Havasu City in the distance.

Almost missed the sign.

Just before we parted ways I remembered a picture.
What a nice couple, Rose and George, to spend a couple of hours with.
Thank you for making time to see us on such short notice.

Not a very good picture of the London Bridge. I took it as we
drove by through the screen on the window by were I sit.
What would have been a good picture would have been one
while we were sitting by the London Bridge having lunch.

Look at that beautiful road ahead. No bumps at all.

The views between Lake Havasu City and Parked
are pretty great, also.

I spotted the moon over head and took this picture

then this one of it peeking at us over the mountain.
I could not believe I got this picture through the windshield.

The scenery along here is truly beautiful.

Going through Parker.

We stopped for diesel at Running Man just as we were leaving Parker. We had talked about stopping at the Walmart in Parker as the sun was setting but Tom said lets keep going. He is doing the driving so that is his decision to make. We know where we are going, Plomosa Road, and we know that just after we make the turn on to the road there are large open areas on either side we can pull into and stop for the night. The thing is it is never fun to park in the desert after dark. There are ridges along the road and you need to find the flat area to use get on to the pad and in the pitch black those flat areas are hard to see even when you know where they are.

We were probably about 20 minutes from our stop
when the sun set for the evening.

Now we  watching the miles with fingers crossed
we will still have some light to park in.

We turned onto Plomosa and found our way on to the pad. Tom got out to check that we had stopped in a decent spot, came in, and turned the Stinger B's engine off as the inky black darkness engulfed us.We have parked in the dark before out in the desert but we make the choice to stay just on the edge of whatever place it is. The lie we tell ourselves out here is, it will be easy to find we have been there several times. It does not matter how many times you make the trek after dark everything looks different and there are times even with our landmarks we have had to backtrack and try a different way to find the Stinger "B".

Safely parked we had dinner and just relaxed. In the morning we will unhook the Jeep and go and check out a couple of places we have parked at in the past. Once we find a place we will move the Stinger "B" and set up our home for a bit in this place. We are in the desert a place we have come to love as much as the beautiful lakes and forest of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan a place called home.

We are glad you stopped by!
If you have time to leave a comment we would enjoy hearing from you.

  2. You two are part of the reason we packed up the camper and headed SW last winter. Our intent was to stay north, but after seeing your posts we got the itch to head south. This year we are headed SE in just a little over a month!

  4. With just your description, I'm picturing your surroundings.
Don't know if you have ever been to the Desert Bar. It is located north of Lake Havasu. The Five Mile trek from the highway is very bumpy. The entire compound is Solar Powered. Music can be loud.
Keeping our fingers crossed for next year.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

    1. As Tom and I were sitting out earlier our conversation was about how quiet it was and has been parked here. There is a peace out here.

  7. I enjoyed this post very much. Visiting with friends over a meal, a drink or just a cup of something is always a great time. Parking after dark is never fun, arriving home after dark isn’t fun either. Lol
